As our odyssey out west came to a close, we were ready to check out some of the crags in the east.
I in particular was anticipating the return to some southern sandstone. But we still had to cross
the Midwest. It is a long and boring drive from Colorado to Southern Illinois and I had done it a
few too many times. This time we decided to check out a climbing area we had heard about that was
located in Kansas. That’s right, Kansas. Rock City is in the dead middle of state and not far from
the interstate. It breaks the drive up very nicely. The boulders are sandstone and range from 6 to
20 feet in height. Surprisingly it was really good climbing. The friction was fantastic and the
problems fun. The only downside to the area was that it was so small. Of course if you are just
passing through there is plenty to do. Even with the flat tire and running out of gas, stopping at
Rock City, Kansas made this drive one of the more pleasant ones.
