Bouldering in Joe's Valley
April 18th - 19th, 2003

Leaving Bishop was hard. After spending a month there the Pit seemed like home. To distract ourselves for few days Angela and I headed to Zion and did some hiking and saw some spectacular sights. Then it was on to Joe’s Valley.

From the moment I touched the rock I knew that I would like this place. And coming straight from Bishop, Angela and I were feeling really strong. The sandstone was a nice change from volcanic tuff and granite that had been destroying our skin. To top things off the camping was free and the locals were friendly. We became a sending machine with Angela sending her hardest problem yet and Merrick on an onsighting rampage.

The only problem was the weather. For one hour it would be sunny and we would be in our t-shirts. Then it would start snowing for an hour and we would need to break out our down jackets. Then it would be sunny and warm again. Then it would hail. Then sun, snow, sun, rain… Just when you were warmed up you would be running for the car again. It wore us down. So despite the fact that we loved the rock and the climbing we moved on after a few days. Hopefully the next time I am back there the weather will be more stable.
